Horse EW Bets

EW bets expose a long-standing imbalance: win odds move quickly with market sentiment, but place odds lag behind. This lag is one of the most consistent sources of value in horse racing

What is an each-way bet?

Example of a Horse
EW Value Bet

Let's say there is a horse race with 10 runners, and one of the horses, "Checkmate" has odds of 13.0 to win the race. An each-way bet means you are placing two bets:

1 On the horse to win
2 On the horse to place

The place terms vary depending on the number of runners and the bookmaker, but let's assume the place terms are 1.25 the odds for the first 3 places.

Here's how the each-way bet would work:

Edge dashboard pops up with a Horse value bet – we state that these odds are undervalued for a win and EW bet
1
The Win bet

If Checkmate wins the race, you win your bet at odds of 13.0

2
The Place bet

If Checkmate finishes in one of the first three places (second or third), you win a fraction of the odds, which would be 1.25 of 13.0, or 4

So let's say you place a £10 each-way bet on Checkmate

Your total stake is £20 because you are placing two bets.
1

If Checkmate wins the race, you win both the win bet and the place bet.

Your return would be (£10 x 12) + (£10 x 3) = £120 + £30 = £150

2

If Checkmate finishes in one of the first three places, but does not win the race, you win only the place bet.

Your return would be £10 x 3 = £30

3

If Checkmate finishes outside the top three, you lose both bets and your return is £0.

In this example ,not only are you able to hedge by betting on the horse to win and place, but you’re also capitalizing on the odd pricing inefficiencies thanks to Edge

Not only do you have a better chance of winning something even if the horse doesn't win the race, but the laws of probability are on your side to turn these into consistent profitable bets

  • Potential for higher payouts if EW or outright bet wins
  • Suitable for long shot bets due to EW mechanism
